As a dedicated Curriculum Manager, I am tasked with leading and overseeing the GCSE and Functional Skills English provision within Southwark College. My responsibilities include the effective management of a teaching team comprising five academic staff members. The primary focus of this role involves leading the delivery of a comprehensive GCSE English program to approximately 400 students aged 16-18 enrolled in Study Programmes.I am responsible for the coordination and leadership of an adult English curriculum, encompassing a blend of Functional Skills and GCSE classes. My commitment extends to successfully implementing the teaching of GCSE English as an integral component of the college's Study Programme offering. This involves the formulation of Schemes of Learning, creation of lesson plans, and development of innovative teaching materials to enhance the overall learning experience. Upholding standards of excellence in teaching and learning is a cornerstone of my role. I strive to establish a positive and engaging learning environment that resonates with students and meets their diverse learning needs consistently.

In this position I Implement teaching strategies which help learners to improve their GCSE English grade from a 3 to achieve a 4. It is my strong belief that structured lessons, explicit teaching, clear lesson goals, setting objectives and providing feedback, plenty of practice and worked examples are crucial. I boldly claim that with a narrowed focus and limiting instructions to learners, focus on a few things can have a big impact and can help learners gain extra marks which could lead to a two-grade uplift.

In the role of Learning Support Assistant, I supported learners with both GCSE and Functional skills Maths and English. For my cohort of learners, I kept individual learning plans which were developed from the results of BSKB initial diagnostic assessments and were continually reviewed to track development and achievements. While supporting learners and working with course tutors I identified specific teaching requirements and learning strategies while regularly inspecting books and quality of work.

I deliver inspiring and effective English teaching and assessments to a range of FE learners 16+ for GCSE English Language. The student-centred approach is used in class creating an interesting and engaging environment. Due to the nature of the students, many of whom were unable to settle into mainstream education, in this role it was necessary to build a positive learning environment where learners feel confident enough to contribute, share and build on their ideas. Individual learning plans are developed for all learners to identify learning support needs, I run workshops to help improve performance and develop key skills; most recently, I had a cohort of borderline learners, 26/34 passed their GCSE, so 76% who attended workshops passed. I believe that it is an important objective to make the English class an interesting yet organised place.
