Leading research and development of applications for data-driven petroleum production optimization.

As Adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics, NTNU, I lecture and supervise research in the fields of machine learning and mathematical optimization. With the rising adoption of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the industry, Cyberneticians must understand both the opportunities and limitations of the applied algorithms. I aspire to facilitate the development of smarter, data-driven methods for decision support and process optimization.

Topic of PhD project: Daily production optimization for subsea production systems: Methods based on surrogate modelling and mathematical programming.Description: Optimization of oil and gas production systems is a difficult task due to the highly complex physics of multi-phase pipe flow and its dance with the upstream reservoir boundary conditions. Decades of knowledge about these systems is materialized in the advanced multi-phase flow simulators which are available in the market today. When coupled with real-time sensor data, these simulators can increase awareness of current operating conditions and predict the behavior of the network fluid flows. Accurate simulation enables production optimization – the search for an optimal operating condition. This PhD project is dedicated to maturing the technology that is production optimization with new theoretical results on surrogate modelling and mathematical optimization techniques.Main collaboration partner: BPSupervisor: Prof. Bjarne Foss

Starting in an Engineering Trainee position I worked the 8 first months in various departments at the head office and workshop in Kongsberg. At the end of my trainee period I moved to the PPS department in Asker. There I acheived a position as Flow Engineer with responsibilities in supporting customers, performing flow studies, and participating in projects involving the FlowManager multi-phase flow software. I was the FMC contact towards Statoil on several fields, including Oseberg and Troll (optimization). I eventually got a Senior Engineer position and shifted my capacity to include software development of FlowManager.

Worked with Nonlinear Model Predictive Control of a subsea boosting station. Implemented in Septic/C++.

Worked with software development and computer system monitoring.

Responsible for the development of a patient journal database system demo for St.Olavs Hospital – Institute of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation. The demo was tested and displayed at two different hospitals.
