From the time I was four years old, I've wanted to be a lawyer. I remember the time when I tripped over my aunt's coffee table and told her that she'd be "hearing from my lawyer." But I never felt a tug toward a particular field until my second year of law school, when I was exposed to many of the issues that plague the criminal justice system as an extern for the Monongalia County Circuit Court. During the following semester, I served as a Constitutional Law teaching assistant and received the CALI Award for Schools, Race, Money, or More, a seminar about the inequities in school funding and how they interrelate with other systematic issues in the U.S. education system. During the following summer, I interned for the Federal Public Defender in Clarksburg, West Virginia, as a Sprouse Fellow, where I assisted with several motions to suppress, appellate briefs to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and sentencing memorandums. I consider myself fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to witness firsthand both the expediency and shortcomings of the federal criminal justice system. I was then accepted into the West Virginia Innocence Project, a clinic at the West Virginia University College of Law, for my third year of law school. As a member of the West Virginia Innocence Project, I drafted appellate briefs and other legal documents to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, screened cases to determine whether the applicant's case is a good fit for the West Virginia Innocence Project, and assisted with the preparation of a petition for certiorari to Supreme Court of the United States. Alongside my position at the West Virginia Innocence Project, I served as a teaching assistant for Legal Research & Writing during both semesters of my 3L Year. During the second semester of that year, I returned to my position as a teaching assistant for Constitutional Law. When I'm not busy going bonkers over the criminal justice system, I really enjoy a mean cup of joe. As a former barista, I like to devote a little extra time in the morning to my Chemex. There's just something about the 3 1/2 minutes of stillness every morning that's good for the soul.
