I'm a research scientist working on neuro-symbolic artificial intelligence: systems that combine deep learning approaches with logical reasoning and planning capabilities. I'm interested in the application of these techniques towards industries where accurate, predictable, and explainable AI behavior is at a premium.I previously earned my PhD in Computer Science from the University of Rochester, where I worked on a general-purpose dialogue management framework for virtual conversational agents. This framework was used to develop several applications including SOPHIE, a virtual standardized patient used to coach physicians in handling difficult end-of-life scenarios; LISSA, a conversational agent for interactive social skills practice; and DAVID, a situated conversational agent capable of collaborative structure-building and question-answering in a physical "blocks world" domain. I also developed and trained Bayesian statistical models to analyze how mental states such as belief, desire, and intention are communicated through language.
