InternTübi̇tak Bi̇lgem Jul 2024 - Oct 2024TürkiyeDuring my internship at the Quantum Technologies Laboratory at TÜBİTAK BİLGEM, I worked on utilizing nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond for highly sensitive magnetic field detection in the submicrotesla range. NV centers are defects in the diamond lattice involving a nitrogen atom adjacent to a vacancy and are excellent candidates for quantum sensing because of their ability to maintain quantum coherence at room temperature. This property allows for precise measurements of magnetic fields. By analyzing the energy levels of NV centers, which are influenced by external magnetic fields, I contributed to detecting subtle magnetic field variations. These interactions, described by the Hamiltonian, offer insights into electron-electron, electron-nuclear, and nuclear-nuclear spin interactions, making NV centers ideal for quantum sensing applications. My main contribution was developing and implementing machine learning algorithms to enhance magnetic field detection. I employed signal processing techniques such as moving average filters (MAF), fast Fourier transform (FFT), and Butterworth filters to reduce noise caused by laser scattering and electronic components. Additionally, I trained a customized neural network to map the relationship between the NV center emission spectra and magnetic field values, employing variational autoencoders (VAE) and models like random forest and XGBoost to uncover these complex connections.Lastly, I examined how external factors such as magnetic field orientation, incidence angle, and different optical filters influenced detection accuracy. This work contributed to advancing the use of NV centers in quantum sensing, with potential applications in areas such as biomedical imaging and quantum computing, offering significant promise for future technological advancements. -
