I feel that my background in electrical engineering and subsequent experience designing hardware has given me an edge in my chosen field of software design. Understanding the hardware by actually designing and developing it was the first step towards becoming a top-notch software engineer. Although my background in computers began well before my teenage years, it was my experience as a hardware engineer and firmware developer that helped me bridge the gap between begin a "hacker" and a true software professional.My most recent experience involves intensive work in Visual C++ and C#. I have equal comfort writing complex data analysis programs and .NET-based web sites. I have been immersed in the software development, deployment, and management lifecycle with responsibility for managing servers with 24x7 uptime. This includes managing SQL Servers, Web Servers, and MS Access databases.I'm not content to write bits of code piecemeal. As a solutions provider, I'm involved in the project from its conception to its completion and beyond, which includes maintenance, upgrades, and end-of-life issues. I have created not just customized solutions, but whole platforms for software development and implementation. As a result, I have developed the ability to create maintainable systems, i.e. systems that not only work as intended, but also facilitate scalability, performance analysis, and troubleshooting while requiring minimal maintenance.Oftentimes, an executive will identify a business need, without having the time or expertise to define the solution or even formally define the problem itself. In such circumstances, an engineer is needed not only to provide a solution, but to understand the problem and help define the solution, without having to be spoon-fed every detail. I can work from both detailed requirements as well as take an active role in determining the solution.
