About Blair Canedy

My interest in student affairs started when I transferred from the university I spent my first year of college at, to the one I have graduated from. I experienced the adaptation, yet again, to a new environment, but this time I was alone and without family. I turned to my new institution's Dean of Students Office just to stay in school and have a roof over my head, with food on the table. It was then that I knew I wanted to help students that may experience similar situations I went through. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed my interests. I am now looking for new opportunities to use transferrable skills I have gained throughout my academic career in a new field. I am committed to lifelong learning, progressing myself in new facets of the working world, and have a passion for assisting others. Community Navigators (Promotores) is a model of service delivery that was most recently used in the Affordable Care Act enrollment process.  They are community members who receive specialized training in immigration matters to be able to effectively be a referral source and/or a service provider for immigrants.   They are educators, health care workers, advocates, interpreters, social service providers, students.  The Internship Project offers a 10-module training which covers topics such as Immigration 101, forms of immigration relief, avoiding unauthorized practice of law, identifying legal help, and reporting victimization.  A shorter training is available to become primarily a referral source rather than offering direct service. (http://www.immigrationproject.org/volunteer/volunteer-opportunities/) Community Navigators help with workshops, appointments, and assist clients with documents and questionnaires. All of this is to quicken the application processes. There are 5 main roles that volunteers can get involved in: 1) Ask a Navigator: You will familiarize yourself with documents that clients need for their cases, attend clinic consultations and/or meet with individuals to answer questions. 2) Community Speakers: You will be trained to give presentations on basic immigration law and the Immigration Project. 3) Workshop Assistant: You will be trained to fill out common forms, and assist clients one-on-one through the citizenship process. 4) Community Engagement: You will welcome clients on clinic days, gather information and discuss contract to clients who are seeking legal representation.  5) Community Assistant: This consists of helping and assisting clients who have to go pick up documents in court, etc.
