When you are not safe, nothing else matters. For the billions of people who live in poverty, the ever present specter of violence is a part of their everyday lives. Education and economic development mean little if you are stuck in slavery or terrified of the very real possibility of being beaten, raped or murdered when you go to school, or go to the market, or come home. For the last 16 years I have worked with my colleagues around the world to end that everyday violence. In that time we have seen hard pressed governments rise to the challenge of protecting their citizens by making their justice systems work. And we have seen dramatic reductions in violence as a result. For example, in four years of working in a Philippines state we saw the prevalence of children in the commercial sex industry fall by 86 percent.Over the course of my career I have pioneered IJM's anti-trafficking work in India and led our anti-trafficking programming in Southeast Asia. In my most recent position I was responsible for all of IJM's programming world wide. Today I lead a diverse team of professionals based around the world to manage the customer experience for our partners in government, business and civil society. We are driving strategy to protect half a billion people in poverty from violence and stewarding IJM's global brand.
