As a research assistant for the Kaeberlein Lab, I had the opportunity to work on exciting projects that explored the biology of aging. My specific role was to work on the yeast and worm projects, where I helped test and identify experimental treatments that could potentially extend health lifespan in humans.My responsibilities included preparing growth substrate, performing dissections of mother and daughter yeast and worm organisms, collecting, organizing, and analyzing data, and contributing to a large team ultimately looking to address the number one risk factor for all disease: aging.Working on these projects gave me an opportunity to develop my research and lab skills. I learned how to properly handle experimental subjects and growth media, how to collect and analyze data, and how to work effectively as part of a team.Moreover, contributing to research aimed at extending the healthy lifespan of organisms is a valuable experience that has far-reaching implications. By understanding the underlying mechanisms of aging, we can potentially develop interventions that not only extend health lifespan but also reduce the incidence of age-related diseases.Overall, my time as an undergraduate research assistant for the Kaeberlein Lab provided me with a unique and enriching experience that helped me develop valuable skills and contribute to meaningful research in the field of aging biology.
