About Blake Joyce, Phd

Blake is a Senior Scientific Consultant at BioTeam. He has journeyed from ecological field research, plant biotechnology and bioinformatics, and ultimately to facilitating research on advanced cyberinfrastructure (HPC, cloud, science gateways). He enjoys being a data science trail guide: researchers and leadership teams point to what mountain they want to climb, and we work out the logistics from there.People often joke that I'm a code-curious biologist and work with a lot of biology-curious coders. I started my scientific career as an ecologist and realized they needed to learn genetics. Then I became a geneticist and learned that they needed to learn bioinformatics. Then I became a bioinformatician and realized they needed to learn data science and research computing. 15 years later, I started working for CyVerse to deliver data science, cyberinfrastructure (computing resources), and advanced data visualizations to ecologists, geneticists, and other life scientists. Afterwards, I realized that my calling was leading teams of data scientists, research software engineers, and CI professionals to meet the demands of modern research. As the UArizona Research Computing Assistant Director, we supported 2,269 unique researchers in 725 research labs from 105 different departments use our services. In 2021 alone, there were 1,099 unique, active researchers supported by our services across 471 labs (up +68.6% and +74.4% overall from 652 researchers and 270 labs the year before I joined). After a year at UAB, our community increased to 716 (+ 22.6%) from 584 active researchers using our services the previous year.I joined BioTeam so that I could collaborate with any researcher group (industry, government, or academic) in the world that is interested in digital transformation and improving research outcomes. Currently a Member of:- ACCESS Resource Allocation Committee- US Research Software Engineer Association (US RSE)- Campus Champions- Academic Data Science Alliance- Founding member of Research Bazaar Arizona
