"What kind of people do you want to take care of?" -Everyone"The kind that are too sick to speak for themselves." -Me In 2016 I left a comfortable desk job to chase something different. I was making a living, but not enjoying my life. I thought becoming an EMT would be a good life skill to have, even if it didn't become a career. Being an outdoorsman in Colorado, with my days full of climbing, biking, running, and hiking miles away from cell service, I needed the practical skills as a first responder just to help me and my friends if we ever needed it. Little did I know, I found something that would resonate with me more than other paths ever did. After moving from Colorado to Mississippi (probably the sickest state out of all fifty) in 2017, I took a job as a tech in a Level 1 Trauma Center emergency department while I pursued nursing school full time. It didn't take long for me to realize that I love trauma. I love working with the sickest of the sick patients. I love being part of a team watching the cascading effects of diseases that many people never get the chance to interact with. This is something I wanted to get deeper into.Now, a few years into my nursing career, I have the privilege of working with some of the sickest in the south. Combine the levels of crime, poverty, obesity, and rampant co-morbidities that the capital city in Mississippi has, and you get some of the most diverse and interesting cases of trauma and disease out there. I am a part of something special. I work with some of the best trauma surgeons out there, who have come from many big cities and agree that the sickest of the sick are here in Mississippi. I get to be a vital part of the care of the most intense organ transplant cases with a team that has been ranked among the top few in the country. I get the opportunity to teach what I know, as a trainer, to newer nurses entering the field amidst growing uncertainty in the healthcare field.As I continue to grow and improve my skills, I am excited to see where I can develop myself and others, both in the hospital and out. In a healthcare climate that is continually growing technologically, I cannot wait to be a part of the development and implementation of some of the most care-altering concepts out there.
