I was born in Nederland, Texas in a Filipino-American household. One of the greatest lessons I have learned in my life is how precious freedom and economic prosperity are, and how they have enabled me to pursue my beliefs and obtain a good education. I feel that I have inherited traditions of work, sacrifice, and gratitude in my life. I have found a strong sense of identity through my Filipino-American heritage, and these two cultures influence the way I see and interact with the world.During the summers of 2016-2019, I worked at the Packard Law Firm where my father practices with three of his brothers. My uncles have worked together for over 20 years, and I came to admire how well they work together and how they are able to build upon that relationship to create an environment conducive to trusting relationships with their clients. The atmosphere was synergistic, professional, and it affected the behavior of all the staff members; this is a work ethic I strive to emulate.I performed the computer software and maintenance responsibilities at the law firm most of the time. I learned a lot about the management of a volume practice. Building a fee application document assembly system provided an opportunity to understand the practical aspects of getting paid for performed work. I was also able to observe firsthand how diverse communications with clients can be for lawyers and staff with clients, including phone calls, memos, letters, emails, texts, faxes, and so forth, not to mention person-to-person interviews. Keeping track of time spent working on a case is a major practical chore, whereas the true focus is providing good value for the clients and hopefully winning the case.During my final summer at the law firm, I revised numerous video advertisements so that they would fully comply with all state advertising rules. This immersive work helped me understand more about a lawyer’s ethical responsibility, especially when making client communications. For example, I discovered how important it is that lawyers communicate to prospective clients in a trustworthy way and how it is important to avoid creating unjustified expectations. More than anything else, these experiences working at the law firm helped solidify my decision and plans to pursue law school and a legal career, as I have always wanted my professional life to involve collaboration, service, and mentally stimulating work. Currently, my Law School experience is propelling me to be in a position to offer worthy professional services to the larger society.
