I am a research scientist studying aspects of applied mathematics and atmospheric dynamics. I am funded by grants received from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Office of Naval Research (ONR), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). My research focuses on aspects of tropical cyclone structure and dynamics from a coherent structure perspective. I employ many techniques from data science including machine learning, image classification, regression models, predictive modeling and Bayesian inferencing. In addition to my theoretical work, some of the highlights of this job include:1. I designed, developed, and produced an automated vortex tracker for near-real-time early detection of potential developing tropical cyclones from global numerical weather models, and I deliveer results to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC).2. I used my mathematical concepts to provide guidance on the performance of the NOAA HWRF-genesis hurricane model in correctly analyzing pre-genesis storm systems.3. I worked as a science team member analyzing data from the NASA Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) and Pre-Depression Investigation of Cloud systems in the Tropics (PREDICT) experiments.4. I received and managed NSF grants as the PI for NSF-AGS-1439283 and NSF-AGS-1656156.5. I have written many peer reviewed journal articles detailing how coherent structures arise in tropical cyclones.6. I have substantial experience writing grant applications.7. I have designed and developed idealized fluid dynamical models. 8. I have experience running high-resolution numerical weather prediction models.9. I developed a software package for the detailed analysis of non-linear transport in stratified fluid flows.10. Much of my work involves processing large quantities of satellite, dropsonde and radar data.11. I serve as reviewer for several meteorological journals and for NSF.
