A large portion of time was spent mechanically testing large structures to ensure adequate strength before sending them off to the customers for install. This involved set up, static tests using dead weight and hydraulics, and tear down. This allowed me to work with the stress department to ensure structures would not fail, think critically about how to fix potential problems, and be creative with how to run a test. In my spare time, I was able to work on Autodesk Inventor doing 3D modeling and creating 2D drawings for manufacturing. Primarily, I designed a parametric door which could be altered to any size with various different latches by simply changing variables. This involved working with iLogic and coding in visual basic along with gaining a knowledge of dimensioning, tolerancing, and basic modeling skills.
Research Assistant
Over a four month time period, I was tasked with designing a low profile, comfortable, and simple force sensor to be used on an individual's thumb for the purpose of testing paralysis levels chemically induced during surgery. With no prior concepts, I brought my clinical mentor a list of 5 different ideas of which we moved forward with one. I then used SolidWorks to design the initial prototype and used 3D printing technology for manufacturing the initial prototype. After testing the device, there were multiple rounds of iterations where I manipulated the size, shape, and customizability of the device. The final product was presented at the May 2017 Anesthesiology Academic Night Presentation and we are currently working on implementing the device for surgical testing.
Engineering Innovation In Medicine Club
Over the course of my senior year, I collaborated with a group of 5 students to design a new type of mouthguard that is comfortable and adaptable for children undergoing orthodontic work. Initially, I interacted with clinicians, patients, and other stakeholders to understand where current products fail and to develop core functions for our device. I designed a working prototype to be used for testing. There were multiple manufacturing techniques being used including 3D printing using Polycaprolactone (PCL, which involved altering GCODE to complete a print at appropriate temperatures). We settled on molding sheets of PCL. To do this, I had to design and print a male and female part to be used to mold PCL sheets. After iterating and creating multiple prototypes, we finally created a final product which we presented to teachers, other students, and various clinicians at the Spring Engineering Innovation in Medicine Symposium.
