Love IT? Passionate about what I do? Absolutely! Why? Glad you asked. Like most tech employees, I enjoy solving complex technical problems for and with people, but technology for technologies sake is, well, missing something. What is the reason? Is there a purpose? Where is the 'why'? I'm grateful to have discovered my 'why' years ago on my family's first computer, a bare bones machine running Windows 95, and again, later in school, when I began working as a student tech support. I began to connect the dots between technology and the ability to disseminate knowledge and information, nearly effortlessly, across the planet, to all who yearned to learn. This is Information that was once lost, beyond reach, or flew in the face of everything that we 'knew' to be true. The information, as it were, was nothing more than bits of data scattered across a global centralized and decentralized mesh network environment consisting of independent local and cloud nodes. This data, and the information that it comprises, is both exceptionally vulnerable and immensely powerful as is made evident to us by the lengths to which we are willing to go to acquire it and protect it once we have it.I knew then what I wanted to do, what my purpose was, my 'why'. I was going to protect the technology that allowed for the free flow of thoughts and ideas; an information marketplace that promotes and encourages both competition of thought and diversity of ideas. What I didn't know at the time were the acronym technologies that made the dissemination marketplace possible. You know, all of the buzzwords that job seekers insist on including in their resume, such as RDP, VPN, CDN, DMZ, WAN, SDWAN, FW, WAP, DNS, DHCP, NAS, SAN, VM, DC, AD, IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, AZ, AWS, SSL, SMTP, TLS, SSH, FTP, MD5, 3DES, AES, RSA, and so on and so forth. Lastly, my personal favorite, CIA, confidentiality, integrity, and availability.At the end of the day, the technological aspect is but one dimension, and, in and of itself, is of little significance. As we come full circle, it really is serving others and contributing to our society that gives me a sense of fulfillment, energy, and the drive that I need to remain disciplined, continue to learn and grow, and stay the course, to fulfill my mission, to leave this world better than I found it.
