About Blake Ellis

I joined Burns & McDonnell as a project manager in 2003 after spending 13 years with an architecture/engineering firm in Minneapolis, MN and then moving with them to Kansas City, MO. During my time at Burns & Mac I have worked on some high-profile projects such as being the program manager for the Sprint Center arena in downtown Kansas City and the owner's representative for the $700 million renovation of Arrowhead and Kaufman Stadiums for the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals. In between the sports projects I worked on central utility plants for Lockheed Martin in Texas and the United States Central Command in Florida. I lead the design of the $377 million expansion of an extremely large central utility plant for Thermal Energy Corporation in Houston. The plant has an 8.8 million gallon thermal energy storage tank that received a First Place ASHRAE Technology Award in 2012 and an 80,000 ton chilled water plant that received a Second Place ASHRAE Technology Award in 2013.Now I lead a group of campus energy experts that focuses solely on the campus energy marketplace. I received my Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota in 1992 and my Masters of Business Administration from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota in 1998. I am a registered professional engineer in fourteen states and the District of Columbia as well as an ASHRAE Fellow, DBIA Designated Design-Build Professional and LEED Accredited Professional. I am also very active in ASHRAE at all levels including serving on the ASHRAE Board of Directors as the Regional Chair for Region IX from July 2014-June 2017 and now as a Director at Large from July 2022-June 2025.     My time at Ellerbe Becket started as a co-op student while at the Univeristy of Minnesota and ended as a Principal. I was fortunate to have many great experiences and work on some interesting projects like helping add district cooling to downtown St. Paul, added a second thermal storage tank at State Farm corporate headquarters and several projects at the University of Notre Dame. Later in my time at Ellerbe Becket I worked on several NBA and NHL arenas and NFL stadiums while I was leading the development of an MEP group in the Kansas City office.
