Over the course of my time at ReachMobi I oversaw the frontend arm – and contributed to the backend arm – of a new and exciting Browser Push Notification product. Because this was a new product, I was given many liberties in choosing the technology, aiding in the hiring process while growing the team, implementing code and deployment standards (code review, continuous integration, unit testing), and setting standards around Agile practices (Sprints, SCRUM) within the team.Over time, we grew the team, but I started solo on the three key pieces of the product's frontend. The first was a multi-site AngularJS project with A/B testing, Browser Push Notification behavior, various custom services baked in. The following was a hosted Javascript library for use on customer websites providing our push notification technology. The last was a Dashboard UI for both internal and external clients to manage accounts, domains, users, subscribers, segments, scheduling, and reporting. Most of this work was done with modern Javascript: an es6-driven AngularJS project, an Express API supporting the whole thing, and a javascript library written in TypeScript.Over the course of this project, I helped in growing the Push Notification product from concept to over $100K per day in revenue, millions of subscribers, with a hosted library and API supporting millions of page views per day.

Manager, Cms Engineering

San Francisco, Ca, Us

After the success of my work as Senior Web Developer, I was offered a promotion along with the opportunity to grow a team. This required acute attention to the definition of process, standards, and protocols for our team. In preparation for this, I worked with the design team to define standardized processes around review, handoff, and QA. I also worked with our offshore teams to define processes around things like joint-releases, QA for functional consistency across the two stacks, and unification of existing standards & processes. In the end the total support of our team went from myself to a team of 3 Core Engineers, 2 DevOps engineers, and 2 supporting QA Engineers. To date, the team spans 3 countries, and we've moved the CMS from an orphaned system to a reliable web application. With this reliability also came the responsibility of overseeing public versions of key product features, taking the CMS from a pure content-service application to a functional product. During my time overseeing this team, we were able to take time on server from ~450ms to less than 50ms and refactor the initial one-man job I'd put together into a full scale application, which included writing new deployment scripts, Jenkins integration, a migration to AWS, and the inception of a CMS-side API for delivery of content to other parts of the platform.

Senior Web Developer

San Francisco, Ca, Us

As Senior Web Developer at App Annie, I stepped into a role that allowed me to take control of the engineering requirements, standards, and execution of the company's public website. The existing CMS system I inherited was nothing short of defunct, and it was obvious that a number of hands had touched it, all with a different goal and methodology in mind. There was so little trust in its reliability, that it was used purely as a content source, and rendered inside of a separate python project. As the lone engineer working on this, it was my job to clean it up, decouple the development, staging, and service of the CMS content from the rest of the platform, and turn it into a serviceable tool for the company to manage its public-facing image.Throughout this process, I updated a pretty standard WordPress theme, abstracting the core WordPress functionality into a wrapper, and hacking into the load routing with some proprietary PHP to provide much more control over performance, caching, content management, and templates. This included the implementation of Twig templates along-side a fairly robust set of module-based data models tied directly into the WordPress admin. This required a good amount of custom PHP, custom JavaScript, fresh CSS, and large amounts of interaction with the growing Creative Team to enforce the limitations of this transition as well as ensure and encourage the extensibility of this new system in the future. This was also accompanied by a long-awaited visual revamp for the company, so the level of interaction, input, and communication with designers was very high. The other key aspect of this role was global in scope. Being the lone engineer in the US, it was key that I be flexible in order to answer questions, plan, and provide general updates for and with our other engineering teams in The Netherlands and China, as these teams managed the majority of the APIs I'd be consuming, as well as laid claim to the aforementioned python project.
