The Fort Hills oil sands mining project is located in Alberta’s Athabasca region, 90 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, Alberta and is recognized as one of the best undeveloped oil sands mining assets in the region. The project is operated by Suncor, and is scheduled to produce first oil as early as the fourth quarter of 2017 and achieve 90% of its planned production capacity of 180,000 barrels per day within 12 months. The mine life is expected to be approximately 50 years at the current planned production rate. The Fort Hills oil sands mining project will be developed as an open-pit truck and shovel mine. The project is planned to mine and process 110 million tonnes of oil sand per year, yielding an average of 180,000 barrels of bitumen per day at full production.

The JACOS Hangingstone SAGD Demonstration facilities are located on Lease OSL70, approximately 50km southwest of Fort McMurray and 25km west of the community of Anzac. Access is from Highway 63 and our site is within 5 kilometers of the highway. JACOS is the operator of the Hangingstone project. JACOS has been operating the DEMO plants since 1999. The operations provides approximately 7,000 barrels per day of bitumen production from 24 well pairs. The total recoverable resources are estimated at 50 million barrels with a project life of approximately 25 years.The Hangingstone Expansion Project is a joint venture project to develop an area adjacent to the current Demonstration Project by JACOS and Nexen Energy ULC (Nexen) in which JACOS holds a 75% participating interest as the operator, while Nexen holds the remaining 25% interest. Completing the front end engineering design and obtaining Scheme Approval from the Alberta provincial government in November, 2012, the partners have commenced full-scale development work aiming at production start-up in 2016. The initial stage will result in bitumen production capacity of around 20,000 barrels per day. A decision on expansion of the facilities to bitumen production capacity of approximately 30,000 barrels per day will be made after start-up of the operation. Bitumen production will continue for around 30 years using the steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) method, which has already been utilized at the Hangingstone Demonstration operation for more than 15 years.
