As a certified Emergency Medical Responder I am tasked with attending a shift every week. During the shift my crew and I are responsible for going on calls from students, faculty, and visitors of FSU campus. On our calls we check for scene safety, perform primary, and secondary assessments, and render care for people in need. If necessary, we alert Leon county EMS about emergencies that are out of our scope of practice. We perform care before EMS arrives and are responsible with handing patients over with necessary information for continuity of care. During our free time on shift we practice our skills, run through scenarios, and teach our trainees how to handle emergency situations.

Tallahassee Memorial Hospital

During the Fall 2022 semester I received an opportunity to be involved in the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital as a volunteer. I quickly jumped on this opportunity since it would allow me to explore the world of healthcare. At first I was assigned to volunteer at the orthopedic unit. While volunteering there I learned the reality of orthopedic medicine which was very different from the one I imagined. After some time, I decided to pick up another volunteering shift at the hospital. My second assignment was at Bixler emergency center. While volunteering in the ER I learned that the setting was pretty much the same as I imagined it. Overall, I learned a great deal about the medical field while volunteering in both units. I plan to come back to TMH in Fall of 2022 and continue volunteering and learning about the medical field!

I worked on the fifth and sixth floors of the HOPE tower at the Miami Baptist Hospital Main. Both of the floors were oncology units with immunocompromised patients. My main duties included checking in patients/visitors, asking visitors COVID-19 screening questions, checking visitors' temperature, and giving out masks with hand sanitizer.
