Director Of Engineering
CurrentI was brought into Mindsize by its founders due to my reputation for building high quality teams and delivering results to clients. The team has doubled year-over-year and is delivering high quality code. I was able to achieve this, in part, through the following:- Established modern software development lifecycle processes, including architectural reviews and best practices for production deployment.- Wrote job descriptions where there had previously been ambiguity in roles.- Launched a mentorship program that included 1:1s with me, as well as peer-to-peer mentorship. This program alone accounted for a significant improvement in accurately hitting deadlines and building stronger relationships with clients.- Launched an employee recognition program. This program was not limited to the engineering department alone and increased job satisfaction across the entire company.- Put in place a weekly growth call for the engineering team. This call is led by the engineers on topics they care about, not by PM or management. The call has been instrumental in standardizing practices amongst teams.- Designed custom solutions for each client, using technologies such as: Node, React, PHP, SQL, AWS, GCP, On-demand scalable architectures, git, microservices, storybook, test-driven development, and more..- Secured client infrastructure and codebase by leveraging static and dynamic vulnerability scanners, web application firewalls, access controls, and zoning restrictions.. Doing this reduced the number of issues found from hundreds to zero.- Set up development workflows that included CI/CD to production and lower environments.Standardized the hiring process, which led to higher quality candidates making it through the interview process.- Explored new technologies that allowed us to expand the capabilities and offerings for clients.

Here I leveraged my own experience to help leaders gain insights into themselves. Some of these leaders went on to create teams that became the “gold standard” at their organization.

Web Developer
Briefly I worked on: the bookstore website (as webmaster), built the computer club website, worked with and coded for the primary website, overhauled the Wesley site, and built the iPhone/Android application. The Wesley site consisted of over 35 thousand static documents and was built by hand by various web programers over a decade. Utilizing many advanced PHP programming techniques and years of experience I was able to build scripts which read the contents of each file, sorted the title and content out, the placed it into a database with 98% accuracy. Importing the content was completed 3 months in advance of expectations and I was able to spend the rest of the time refining the content and restructuring the site in a manner that allowed for easy navigation by visitors. The iPhone/Android application was also given to me to develop, without any guidelines. Using a mash of public and private APIs, including Twitter, Flickr, Google, and Yahoo I built an application which fulfilled all their needs and more.

Web Application Developer/Server Admin/It
Council for Educational Travel U.S.A is a multi-national non-profit organization. When I started all editing was done live on the web server with Dreamweaver and there were no development guidelines. I immediately setup a development server and separated all development activities from the live server for safety and security. As there were also no backups, I setup the dev server with an automated backup system and each morning backups were automatically pulled from the live server. Additionally the dev server was equipped with Subversion to share and version code, hand compiled Apache, PHP, and MySQL to mirror the live server, email backup system, and full inter-office file sharing capabilities. The in-house application was a large jumbled mess of code pulling from 3 separate databases. A deep analysis of the application began and I developed a comprehensive upgrade strategy that would make the system faster for users and more efficient for developers, the main requirement being the new system was developed in place with no downtime to the current application. After combining the 3 rebuilt databases I built an object-relational modeling system to save time writing complex SQL queries in the future. The new system was half the size of the old system, and twice as fast. The new system contained over a million lines of code.
