About Erika Block

I support early stage companies, community organizations, and university students at the intersection of strategy, leadership, business design/development, and storytelling. There's no one-size-fits-all approach and no rigid framework. My experience as a founder and operator who's worn many hats, across different markets, is the foundation of my work with clients and as an educator.Consulting experience includes work with companies in climate, energy, mobility, SaaS, marketplaces, platforms, supply chains, circular economy, local economies, new media, and community development.I've spent my career moving between the worlds of art, politics, education, food supply chains, and tech startups, as a writer, theater director, teacher, advisor and founder. Before Sticky Lab I created multi-faceted, international arts projects; built software tools for local food systems, and connected immersive technology with knowledge management. As a strategic advisor, I love working with leaders, founders, and explorers who are solving sticky problems. I'm drawn to entrepreneurs who think about the ethics and broad impact of their business, and who aren't afraid of complexity and nuance. As an educator, I'm interested in the intersection of creativity, entrepreneurship and storytelling.Common threads across my work: - Helping people tell stories that inspire action.- Building collaborative environments that enable creativity, learning, innovation and action. - Facilitating conversations among people who don't usually connect. - Identifying and developing new business models and opportunities.

Listed skills include Entrepreneurship, Strategic Planning, Marketing Strategy, Marketing, and 45 others.

My hybrid approach to community building and social media draws from my work as a director, writer, teacher and producer, creating community-centered art and civic dialogue projects that connect people across geographic and demographic boundaries.Interviews for the last piece I worked on turned into an "accidental" customer discovery process for Local Orbit, a tech startup that began as a performance and civic engagement project called A History of Eating. Projects include:• Renovating a vacant, 20,000 square foot building in a Detroit Enterprise Zone into a multi-disciplinary arts venue, with theater, gallery, bar, studio and office space.• Producing, directing, and presenting dozens of multi-disciplinary theater, music, visual arts and and community events.• Co-creating and directing The Walking Project a 4–year arts and civic dialogue project that explored desire lines, or paths, made by people who walk across fields in South Africa and across vacant lots in Detroit – and what connects them. With a team of artists and community partners in the US and South Africa, the project reached over 15,000 people in both countries through performances, humanities events, public walks and conversations, voter registration drives, visual arts exhibits, poetry slams, music, and workshops at schools, universities and churches. • Co-creating and directing an award-winning exchange project with 10 South African artists that reached 8000 people in Southeast Michigan, including 4000 young people, through workshops, performances and community events during a 6-week residency.
