About Brandon Rutter-Daywater
Fulfillment and happiness. For myself, and everybody else, in perpetuity.I believe that living towards this goal is good for me, my fellow beings, my surroundings, and my descendants. My core contributions to a team are usually: communication, integration, planning, debugging, and the design and improvement of organizational systems to support those functions. Personal design and analysis contributions are also regularly pivotal.I make things work.Born in 1977 and raised on love, dirt, and food grown and hunted on Badgersett Farm, I have an abiding regard for the interconnectedness of the world. I am a researcher and roboticist, a once and future hazel and chestnut farmer; a builder, integrator, maintainer, and fixer of systems. My academic experience primarily regards intelligent systems and compliant interaction of robots with the physical world, while large chapters of my life have been on the front lines of sustainable farming and climate change. I feel a deep responsibility, and I will admit some pride, for the quality of my work; and maintain commitment to supporting its long-term success.

Agriculture, Sustainable Systems, And Robotics Consultant
Bass
Bass, and also treasurer, during my years at Swarthmore in this beloved family of a capella singers. Since 2000, less an active member, and more of an alum. But- we do still participate in hijinks, song, and love with some regularity.
Career Break
My wife and I decided to take a self-funded sabbatical year as we recover, re-envision, and optimize our health and long-term plans — following a delayed return to our home in the Upper Midwest and a series of extended-family health care events over the past few years.
Robotic Safety Engineer Consultant
Developed a safety reference library for design, standards, and requirements for service robots working in public spaces. Including standards in development or revision for this new product space, primarily from ISO, IEC, and UL.Requirements, architecture, and test plan development and review at both platform level and for specific product or use case changes.
Lead Roboticist, Etc.
Company and Product-level leadership in robotic systems architecture and design, addressing risks and schedule requirements. Most of my time in this role was spent filling high-priority gaps in more specific areas:• SysQA Leader 2018/06 to mid-2020: Leadership in system integration and test, including for development, Design QA, and Factory QA. Additional work in requirements development, technical demonstration, and company-wide educational program.• Hardware R&D Lead 2019/01 – 2020/10; technical lead only 2020/10-2021/10: Design update, tooling, and production of initial deployable robot. Team building, hiring, and training. Implemented product development process, and fail-early review and integration process with Software, QA and Architecture. Oversaw several revisions of this highly complex system while achieving simultaneous development, production, and deployment.• Acting corporate security leader 2018-2020• Acting product security & safety leader, including direct participation in several ISO Robotics working groups, particularly WG 2 for Service robot safety.• Safety focus 2022/03-06: Development of safety process to allow development and application of safety requirements across multiple products, services, and markets. Included related product and system specification work for process demonstration and debugging.
Robotics Engineer
Company and system-level leadership and coordination of getting the robot to work: starting in Software, driving through initial Hardware-Firmware-Software integration to ownership of full system integration, test, and demonstration. This included months onsite in Taiwan, culminating in onsite technical and theatrical leadership and logistical support of our 2018 CES show.In this role I also led implementation of the worldwide software hiring system, managed document security, guided requirements and system architecture development for the next robot, and was the acting security and safety officer.
Roboticist
Key participant in design, vetting and dissemination of full robotic system architecture, from the APIs to the bolts. Director of many and final tester of most integration and debugging efforts. Integrated, tested and deployed company-wide customized ROS developer VMs. Scrum-style coordination of feature and bug teams for maximal output of worldwide remote staff. Remote over ¾ time, with low-cost telepresence rig I assembled and installed.
Chief Operations Officer
Manager of employees, field operations, greenhouse operations, product quality control, IT, customer service, etc. Production and budget management as well as research implementation and planning. Short-term planning and management of organizational integration; frequent communication with CEO and other research staff regarding the driving long-term goals. Included instruction for short courses, field consultations, management of relations and contracts with other businesses.
Vice President
Strategy development, long-term planning and communications, in addition to the sundries of keeping this still-undercapitalized company afloat until I made Badgersett my full-time job by becoming COO as well in 2009.
Ph.D. Candidate, Biorobotics Laboratory
One of the more critical aspects of legged locomotion is the generation of joint motions that produce coordinated actions both within each leg and between different legs to generate the desired movement of the body. My dissertation work made use of a recent compilation of biological data into an implementable leg control, which introduces a method for computationally and conceptually simple intra-leg joint coordination. My work focussed largely on the design and implementation of a testbed for this type of control, primarily geared towards use in biological modeling. In addition to the book-style dissertation, there have been a few conference papers and presentations made on the results thus far.
M.S. Student, Biorobotics Laboratory
Control of Braided Pneumatic Actuator-actuated robot legs using electromyograms recorded from behaving cockroaches, as a feasibility study regarding the use of such a system in the modeling of neuromuscular function. Includes considerable work on low-level control of BPA-actuated joints using a custom-programmed RT-Linux system. Also includes advising of a senior project student, and numerous interactions with biologists. After starting work on my Ph.D. project and determining that this project involved substantially more than an M.S. was supposed to be, I dropped the project in 2007 in order to better focus my efforts elsewhere.
Visiting Research Scholar
Conducted preliminary experiments regarding force response of the flexor tibialis of Carausius morosus to passive stretch and varying levels of neural stimulation
Project Manager
Village-Friendly Crop Dehydrator project. Development and prototyping of a low-cost hypobaric crop dehydration process promising to be particularly useful in developing areas.
