About Qi Wang

I'm currently a postdoctoral fellow of the Clean Combustion Research Center at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, under the mentorship of Prof. S. Mani Sarathy, working on renewable fuel kinetics and PAH formation pathways. I obtained my Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at University of Michigan, with focus on the stochastic modeling of the formation of aromatics in combustion, under the mentorship of Prof. Angela Violi. I currently have 12 published journal papers, and 3 submitted manuscripts. My research interests include renewable fuel, kinetic modeling, nanoparticles growth, soot precursors, reaction pathways, gas-phase chemistry, and quantum chemistry calculations.

    I was appointed as GSI for 6 semesters and 7 classes over the years of my Ph.D. study. Besides holding office hours, proctor and grading the exams, Prof. Angela Violi and I implemented extra Supplemental Instruction Sessions (SIS) outside regular class time. Different from regular lectures or review classes, we made SIS interactive to enhance students' understanding of abstract concepts. The SIS received very good response from students. In total, I taught more than 20 lectures as substitute teacher and over 40 SIS. I also had remote teaching experience during Winter 2020 and Winter 2021 semesters.

    M-Write is a project to enhance students' Writing-to-Learning (W-to-L) process by the Sweetland Center for Writing at University of Michigan. I was in the M-Write seminar with a group of course instructors and assistants in Fall 2017 to identify important and hard-to-understand concepts for the course and created writing prompts. Prof. Angela Violi and I implemented this learning method in Thermodynamics I classes (Winter 2018, Fall 2018), and continued for Thermodynamics II class (Winter 19).In addition, I've been appointed as M-Write Fellow for these classes. Besides taking extra class to improve my own writing and communication skills, my main responsibility is grading and giving feedback to students' writings, focusing more on their understanding of concepts.These writing prompts also received very good responses from students.

    I interned in the Energy Control Algorithms Lab at General Electric (GE) China Global Research Center (GRC) during summer 2016. As a part of the Digital Twin project, the team was developing a performance monitoring tool for the boiler of the thermal power plants, integrating it into plant control system, and building a Predix cloud platform. My specific task was the assessment of the heat exchangers' cleanliness inside the boiler. My work involved:1. Built boiler physical model in SIMULINK to estimate unmeasured temperatures.2. Established and evaluated the key performance indicators (KPIs) for the cleanliness of the heat exchangers.3. Set up historical database, and studied soot fouling patterns using neural network toolbox in MATLAB.4. Investigated the Chinese energy Sankey Diagram, and generated indicators for decision-making.
