About Bas Meusen Msc

Ik ben gespecialiseerd in het menselijk lichaam en het helpen van mensen om structureel af te vallen en weer trots, fit en vol positieve energie in het leven te staan. Tijdens mijn studies en in mijn persoonlijke sportcarrière ben ik enorm veel adviezen en wijsheden tegengekomen en daardoor ben ik goed gaan begrijpen dat velen niet meer weten wat nou wel en niet werkt. Vanuit mijn achtergrond als Biomedisch Ingenieur is mijn aanpak dan ook anders dan je in een reguliere sportschool gewend bent. Met het juiste persoonlijke programma, een rustige en gestructureerde opbouw en duidelijk uitleg leer jij je eigen lichaam weer kennen en begrijpen. Omdat ik op deze manier werk kun je juist ook met (langdurige) blessures of klachten bij mij terecht en gaan we samen aan de slag om van de klachten af te komen en weer vertrouwen in je eigen lichaam (en geest) te krijgen.

    New supramolecular zwitterionic materials for the creation of anti-fouling scaffolds Currently cell resistant properties in supramolecular biomaterials are achieved by incorporation of UPy-functionalized polyethylene glycol (UPy-PEG) in an UPy-polycaprolactone (UPy-PCL) base material. However protein repellent properties are not clear yet. The goals of this project are to study the protein repellent properties and to create an alternative for UPy-PEG with high protein repellent and cell adhesion resistant properties. To achieve the goals on protein adsorption, assays are performed using a range of proteins, which are all present in the human blood. A library is created of the specific properties of all proteins used (e.g. size, iso-electric point, stokes radius). From the adsorption results combined with this library the factors, which influence protein adsorption, can be determined. These assays are performed on both UPy-PEG materials and UPy-zwitterion materials, to be able to compare between both materials. Next to the protein adsorption assays the UPy-zwitterion material is studied using cell experiments to determine the cell adhesion resistant properties.     SLIPS and pCBMA based Anti-Fouling coatings for Silicon Nanopore Membranes (this work has been accepted as abstract and poster presentation at ASN Kidney Week 2015) This study focuses on two approaches towards anti-fouling properties: hydrophilic coating and hydrophobic coating. The materials subject to this research are sulfobetaine methacrylate and carboxybetaine methacrylate as hydrophilic coating and the newly designed slippery liquid infused porous surface as a hydrophobic coating. All coatings are applied to solid silicon chips to resemble SNM’s and tested for contact angle, coating thickness and protein adsorption using BSA and fibrinogen. Lastly the hydrophobic coating is applied to SNM’s to determine the influence of the coating on the actual pore size of the membrane. Ultimately the current coating process for both SBMA and CBMA shows to be not suitable for coating SNM’s, due to the high risk on damaging the membranes during coating. In terms of coating thickness however all coatings meet the required <5nm threshold. However the level of hydrophobicity of the SLIPS coating prevents all flow through the membrane. Although all coating are subject to adsorption of either BSA or fibrinogen to some extend, SBMA coating shows the most promising results towards an effective anti-fouling coating, though that is potentially highly influenced by the large differences in coating thickness.     Towards a bioartificial kidney membrane: Bi-layer synthetic basement membranes with tailorable properties Current hemodialysis therapy for renal failure is still far from perfect, mainly since the tubulus section of the kidney is not incorporated in the design, leading to possible toxicity and deficiencies in the body. In order to incorporate the tubulus in a renal assist device a membrane needs to be developed, which mimics the tubulus membrane. The goal is to create a membrane, which is viable for epithelial cells on one side and viable for endothelial cells on the other side. The first step in this development is the synthesis of a membrane with cell viability (fouling) on one side and no cell viability (anti-fouling) on the other side. In this project this has been done using a supramolecular and modular approach with polycaprolactone (PCL) as base material and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as anti-fouling agent. Both polymers were functionalized on both ends with an ureido-pyrimidinone (UPy) moiety to make them suitable for a supramolecular approach. The bi-layer membranes in this project were created using electrospinning. A weight ratio of UPy-PCL:UPy-PEG of 70:30 gave the desired cell resistant properties whereas pristine UPy-PCL gives the desired cell viability properties.
