For five years, I worked in a biotechnology research lab as I earned my B.S. and M.S. degrees in Biology. My work centered around characterizing and improving poplar as a biofuel feedstock for the world's energy supply. At the same time, I worked as a teaching assistant for introductory biology classes and discovered my passion for helping students engage with science. I'm working now to take my laboratory skills and scientific training into a high school classroom to work with the next generation of scientists.I am currently finishing up the requirements to receive my initial certification in Adolescent Education in Biology and Chemistry with the General Science Extension, and am working in an Academic Intervention Services position as a licensed Teaching Assistant to support students in ELA and Mathematics. My teaching philosophy is mainly student-centered, with the goal of making material fun and engaging to encourage deeper interaction with the content.
