About Bo Martedal Munk
Today we are making Biodiesel from sewer water, specifically the fraction containing Animal and Vegetable oils. This technology makes great sense in the USA, where most of these oils a put in landfills, but why not do this everywhere? As a Technician and Process Engineer, I have been part of taking the enzymatic biodiesel technology from test plant through production scale-up to disruptive technology in wastewater management.

With Tactical Fabrication (TF) in Georgia, USA, I have helped TF grow its company from an equipment fabricator into a technology provider with the enzymatic biodiesel process. On average I was in the US 100 days per year prior to Covid.The first stage of the project was to develop a business plan for a fully functional plant at 5 million gallons per year of biodiesel made from sewage, this was achieved in 2016. Subsequently met with several investors and assisted in clarifying financial risks and regulatory challenges. We were a small group of 5 proving out the technology at a pilot scale of 250 tons/year, keeping costs low and focusing on the customer’s demands.The second stage was to build the first plant. The plant produced the first fuel in 2021 and produced from pure Brown Grease feedstock in 2022. I have been with this project since the filing of the first patent... to a fully functional plant. So, it is challenging to simply explain my position with TF: When a new step is ready to be taken, I have been the first to research. I have also consulted for TF during the startup of Synergy Biofuels LLC, Virginia, Buster Biofuels LLC, California, and EcoCentric, Indiana. The plants were constructed by Tactical Fabrication but not designed.Technically the project has revolved around process implementation and staff training, assisting to solve challenges with the site-specific raw material, and ensuring that the operators and lab technicians can identify and solve the issue if it should arise again. So to say, technical service to the highest degree.

Seeing the launch of the Eversa enzyme product for biodiesel production in Dec. 2014, after working in selected productions for more than a year, was the greatest feeling of having made a direct impact.With Novozymes, I have expanded my experience within food-grade oils while getting a greater understanding of real-life plant size operations at a dozen locations, which again enabled me to design and carry out pilot and full-scale trials with customers.Key responsibilities were:• Coordination with customers on technical issues• Setup of experiments on costumer’s raw materials in the lab• Site visits to customers in the US and EU • Specialist in enzymatic functionality during production trials at plants• Optimization of the enzymatic process at pilot scale at the customer’s location• Understanding overall process design, layout, and constructionTraveling was a big part of the job, I enjoyed being at customers and the challenges of working with a different culture.Also, being relaxed with English is an empowering feeling, and is crucial when discussing and negotiating.

I assisted in all parts of the construction, design, and R&D of the Biodiesel Plant. I was tasked with setting up a production lab, requesting quotes, and determining test methods possible based on the ASTM D6751 spec. The first R&D project I managed was designing lab-scale reactions. The project enabled Viesel to implement feedstock treatment, which later has become a key to the reaction’s success.Having experience in plant construction gave me a special insight into challenges and solutions. During the commissioning of the plant, I trained staff to operate the plant and troubleshoot their sections.A major R&D project I managed was implementing catalytic resins, both for the use as an absorbent for trace contamination and as a catalyst for better conversion, i.e. higher yields.Since Viesel is one of the world's first producers of biodiesel using Novozymes’ enzymes, I have had the pleasure, as a chemist, to be involved in optimizing all the parameters of the process.
