My 39-year career covers the business of science and medicine, ranges from diagnostics to biotherapeutics, and biotech startups to Fortune 500 companies. I have a proven track record of building high-performing teams and companies, developing and launching novel, innovative products and creating new markets. While CEO of Summit Biolabs, I led company formation and pivot from saliva liquid biopsy for early detection of cancer to transforming the early detection of diseases through pioneering rapid, highly accurate, direct-to-PCR testing for COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. In record time, my team launched a high-volume CLIA laboratory, and built a high-performing team of 35 people, who tested over 590,000 samples for COVID-19. Summit Biolabs made a significant impact on combating the COVID-19 pandemic in Colorado. The company generated over $14 M in revenue and delivered $7 M in treasury within 12 months of launching clinical testing operations. Presently, I am mentoring scientists and physicians at CU Boulder, CU Anschutz, and Rice University, who are seeking to translate disruptive technologies and novel therapeutics from the research lab to the clinic to solve large, unmet medical needs. I have a breadth of disease and therapeutic area experience, including oncology, infectious, neurodegenerative, genetic and orphan diseases. I am an advisor to private equity/venture capital, having advised investors on investments covering a broad range therapeutics, diseases and indications. Investments ranging in size from $50 M to $2 B. I have also been an advisor to 25 life science companies. I am a co-inventor on five patents pending.In my spare time, I have been known to prepare a delicious meal to share with family and friends. Summit Biolabs was spun out of the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. The company leveraged its competencies in saliva liquid-biopsy and pivoted to testing for COVID-19 to help combat the pandemic. The company developed, clinically validated and deployed two high-throughput direct-to-PCR tests using saliva and swab samples to diagnose SARS-CoV-2 infection. These commercial laboratory-developed tests eliminated the time and cost of nucleic acid extraction, while significantly improving the turn-around-time for test results. A rapid testing pathway for hundreds of high-priority samples returned results in < 3 hours from receipt of samples. The company performed over 590,000 tests in its high-complexity, high-volume CLIA laboratory.
