ResearcherSabbatical Feb 2015 - Jan 2016Studied Machine Learning and Data Science. Prototyped a new product concept in C++ using a combination of OpenCV, Caffe (for deep neural networks), and custom algorithms. The trained solution could accurately detect and classify multiple objects in a live 1080p video stream at a rate of 3000 classifications/sec. Also used Python with SciPy and scikit-learn plus other tools to explore application spaces where the incorporation of machine learning and data analytics into solutions could lead to new market opportunities.

Corporate 5G Technical LeadKeysight Technologies Nov 2013 - Jan 2015Provided technical leadership and market opportunity assessments to senior leadership and internal product organizations for all things related to 5th generation cellular technologies. Responsible for early technical engagements with commercial customers, research organizations and industry associations. Developed a 2D Massive MIMO simulation in Matlab which I used as a teaching tool. -
Keynote Speaker, Annual Internal Training EventHp, Agilent, Keysight Nov 1997 - Nov 2014Invited fourteen times over sixteen events to provide a keynote speech to a gathering of the company's world-wide test and measurement technical sales force. These popular talks, which introduced emerging technologies and predicted how they would evolve, typically looked five years into the future. For example, the 2010 topic was Internet-of-Things (IoT).
-
Principal Solutions Architect, Emerging TechnologiesAgilent Technologies Jul 2009 - Oct 2013Various technical leadership and technology development tasks including developing test technology and modulation analysis algorithms for mmWave communications (81199A Wideband Waveform Center), as well as advanced radar technologies. Chaired the Wireless Innovation Forum Test Committee, and served as interim chair of the Interoperability Working Group for the WiGig Alliance. -
Chief Technologist And Inventor, Rf Sensor NetworksAgilent Technologies Dec 2003 - Jun 2009Successfully lobbied for, and acquired, internal funding for research and development of distributed RF Sensor Networks (not to be confused with wireless sensor networks). Recruited a team of engineers and provided the technical leadership to take the idea from concept to field trials with key customers in Europe, Asia and the US, and then on to successful commercialization (N6841A RF sensor and N6854A system software). The solution is still being sold today, and has been copied by other vendors. Contributed to the ITU's effort to update the Spectrum Monitoring Handbook by authoring sections related to the use of time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) techniques. -
Senior Member Technical Staff, Wireless TechnologyAgilent Technologies / Hewlett Packard Jul 1996 - Nov 2003Customer engagements and development of measurement technology primarily related to emerging RF technologies in commercial and aerospace/defense applications. Created all of the measurement science for the 89604A Distortion Test Suite Software where I invented and introduced the concept of additive, or delta EVM. Developed the industry's first modulation analysis tools and algorithms for OFDM signals (COFDM, 802.11a), as well as for: 8VSB (DTV), GSM-EDGE (2.5G), and W-CDMA (3G).
-
Lead Engineer, Program Lead, Vector Signal Analyzers (Vsa)Hewlett Packard Sep 1990 - Jun 1995Software developer for the world's first Vector Signal Analyzer (HP 89400 VSA). Developed calibration, re-sampling and various signal and modulation analysis technologies. As a lead engineer, and later the program lead, I engaged with customers and internal partners to help them understand how this new technology added value in their applications. I was the person largely responsible for getting the VSA “across the chasm” and was often introduced to customers as the father of the VSA. Today, most major T&M vendors involved in RF test have VSA solutions.
-
Development And Marketing Engineer, Dynamic Signal Analyzers (Dsa)Hewlett Packard Jan 1985 - Aug 1989Various development and marketing roles related to DSA technology and applications including acoustics, machinery monitoring, modal analysis, and control systems.
-
Manager, Lead EngineerWashington University School Of Medicine 1982 - 1984Managed a small Instrumentation Lab serving researchers in the Child Development and Mental Retardation Center (CDMRC), now named Center on Human Development and Disability (CHDD). The lab developed and maintained instruments and computer systems. The lab employed one full time technician, and several student engineers.
