  • Independent Professional
    Independent Professional
Independent Professional Apr 2006 - Present
I love to write. I work with my computer. I manage our personal, family and financial matters. I have taken French classes.I like projects. I oversaw and managed a complete renovation and sale of a property I had acquired. With help I cleared the property of furniture and personal effects. I then secured the required permissions to renovate the property. I consulted with a professional designer and a property management professional to determine the best approach for renovating the property. I then selected and purchased updated bath, kitchen, plumbing and electrical fixtures, along with new countertops, flooring, carpeting, paint, kitchen cabinet updates and new kitchen appliances. I hired tradespeople, plumbers and construction professionals to perform the renovations. After I renovated the property, I engaged a staging professional to present it, a Realtor to list it, and, finally, I sold it. I applied my estates and probate legal experience to probate a complex, high value estate and harnessed much of my elder law experience while serving as caregiver for my elderly parent, as set forth in detail, below.
  • For High Value Estate
    Personal Representative And Trustee
    For High Value Estate 2016 - 2018
I was personal representative for a high value probate estate, trustee for several trusts and partner for a limited liability limited partnership connected to the estate. Experience and knowledge I collected as an estate planning and probate paralegal prepared me well for these roles. I opened the probate estate with counsel's assistance. I analyzed the trusts’ distributive provisions and determined beneficiaries. I opened and closed trust and estate bank accounts, marshalled assets and contacted investment brokerages to ascertain other beneficiaries. I contacted all beneficiaries and assisted with distribution of their bequests. I prepared and transmitted forms to investment brokerages to retitle and/or reregister investment accounts in connection with administering the estate. With counsel’s and my accountant’s assistance, I wound up the LLLP and closed the estate. Thanks to my estate planning and probate paralegal experience, I needed minimal professional assistance to probate the estate. Because I completed most of the legal and accounting work myself, the estate incurred minimal legal and accountant fees, and I thereby saved the estate money.
  • For Elderly Parent
    Caregiver
    For Elderly Parent 2013 - 2016
I cared for my elderly parent. I provided emotional support. I laid out medications and administered them when necessary. I brought in meals and prepared them from time to time. I went grocery shopping, ran errands, and did laundry and minor housekeeping. I honored my parent’s wish to remain at home for as long as possible, despite my parent’s worsening health and mental condition. As my parent became increasingly incapable of managing her financial affairs, I took them over. I served as my parent's agent and attorney-in-fact under her powers of attorney. I dealt with lawyers, accountants and financial professionals on my parent’s behalf. I scheduled medical appointments. I maintained engagement with physicians and medical professionals. I transported my parent to medical appointments. I determined need for emergent medical care, and summoned paramedics and ambulances to transport my parent to the emergency department and hospital. Later, I toured nursing homes and assisted living facilities, and placed my parent in an appropriate facility. I hired a professional case manager, and coordinated with her to manage and assist with my parent's ongoing care issues. I discussed and considered hospital treatment and discharge options for my parent with the case manager, physicians and discharge planners. Finally, I authorized end-of-life care that would be in my parent's best interests. My eleven years of paralegal experience, and particularly in estate planning, powers of attorney and elder law, prepared me in ways second to none for when time came to serve my parent.
  • Kiel, Trueax & Gold, Llc
    Personal Injury/Workers' Compensation Paralegal
    Kiel, Trueax & Gold, Llc 1999 - 2006
I was paralegal to a partner in a plaintiffs' personal injury and claimants' Workers' Compensation litigation law practice. I interviewed and scheduled new clients for appointments with the attorney, and prepared intake memoranda. I maintained client contact. I volunteered for and took over from the attorney demand letter preparation. I drafted suit papers, pleadings, disclosures, discovery, expert witness designations, trial management orders and Workers’ Comp pleadings. I coordinated process service. I collaborated with the attorney to fulfill litigation deadlines. I scheduled trials, hearings, depositions, settlement conferences and independent medical exams. I solicited, organized, reviewed and analyzed medical records, reports and billing statements. I prepared comprehensive medical treatment memoranda. After preparing the memoranda, I recommended medical providers to attorney for expert witness designations. After cases settled, I worked up settlement distribution schedules. All work I completed was under attorney supervision. I compiled Workers’ Comp forms in WordPerfect to speed preparation and facilitate accuracy: these efforts most certainly improved my work efficiency. I instituted electronic case filing together with developing training materials and putting on an ECF training seminar for attorneys and staff.I am proud of how I contributed to the practice’s efficiency by volunteering for and taking over from the attorney demand letter preparation. Along with helping the attorney use his time better, it expedited our demand submissions to insurance carriers. This resulted in cases settling earlier and clients being compensated for their injuries sooner.
