Trial work (as opposed to litigation) has been the central focus of my career. Lawyers with real jury trial experience, representing plaintiffs and clients with substantial assets to protect, are far more rare than thought by most clients. Often lead counsel, even heads of litigation departments of larger firms, have limited jury trial experience. This gap in experience makes a big difference in the evaluation and discovery phase of a client's case. Comparisons in "cost-effectiveness"​ between trial lawyers and "litigators"​ are blinding. The litigator's "no stone unturned"​ approach usually comes from a lack of experience seeing what discovery product works well at trial (or is even beneficial), and what is not. Instead, putting a client's money into witness and fact development and focused discovery will pay long-term dividends. Adding an experienced trial lawyer (with a history of working successfully with litigators) to the trial team is a real asset. While a large portion of my jury trials involved defendant clients, every firm I've worked for and in my own firm, plaintiff-clients have always been an important part of our case load. One firm in my history, largely representing life insurers, gave birth to "insurance bad faith litigation" while representing a plaintiff. In the last five years, I was lead or sole counsel in an arbitration and a jury trial that produced a verdict and an award of over five million dollars for my plaintiff clients.Specialties: Over forty years of experience successfully trying and defending bad-faith claims to a verdict involving leading life insurance companies in Southern California courts.
