Led a team that developed the External Air Bag System for helicopter crash protection. Tracked budget and schedule status through MS Project. Prepared specifications and statements of work for subcontractors developing air bag, gas generator, and radar technology. Developed crash prediction algorithm in Matlab using Kalman filters to process radar and inertial sensor data and determine when to inflate air bags prior to impact. Used Matlab simulations to quantify performance requirements for subsystems and develop specifications. Team completed flight test of crash prediction hardware and software, and full scale crash testing of prototype air bag system on OH-58A helicopters.

Led a team that developed a 5-point inflatable restraint harness for helicopter pilots through prototyping and demonstration testing. Led a team that developed an inflatable head support collar, head impact cushion, and wind diverter for the ACES-II ejection seat to reduce the probability of injury when pilots eject above 600 knots air speed. Completed wind blast testing to demonstrate the feasibility of prototype hardware. Project Engineer supporting development of the U.S. Army's Cockpit Air Bag System (CABS). Prepared test plans, test reports, and product specifications. Reduced crash test data and assessed occupant injury from Hybrid-III test dummies. Assessed effectiveness of crash detection algorithm through simulations in Matlab. Conducted sustaining engineering and through-life support after installation of the system on the Army's UH-60A and OH-58D helicopters.

Applied multi-physics combustion models to reduce pollutant emissions of combustion equipment. Evaluated non-catalytic reduction of sulfur dioxides through ammonia injection in the flue gas, and reduction of unburned carbon and nitrogen oxides through staged combustion and optimization of fuel and air mixing. Evaluated predictions of temperature and chemical species concentrations against test data. Presented results to customers. Completed thermal analysis of a highway tunnel fire using PATRAN and P/Thermal. Modified software in FORTRAN to compute fuel particle trajectories during combustion using parallel processing on a cluster of Unix servers per the MPI standard. Developed a simplified physics-based model of combustion and pollutant emissions in FORTRAN for system modeling of an oil-fired power plant. Developed software in FORTRAN to automate application of boundary conditions for simulation of coal burners feeding a full scale power plant.
