As a Chief Officer, you plan and supervise all the cargo operations. This concerns the loading and discharging of the cargo, the securing and lashing of the cargo, and the constant monitoring of the cargo during the voyage. Planning and supervising the deck maintenance activities are part of the job as well. It was an honor to fulfill this function within Jumbo!

Sustainability and the way in which we, as humanity, deal with the environment and nature are becoming increasingly important in society. Public opinion takes a critical attitude with regard to consumption behavior and the way in which companies operate. Jumbo recognizes its position in the environmentally damaging operations that we perform. This awareness is driven by new legislation and regulations, but even more by an intrinsic motivation to make the company and its activities more sustainable. However, it is not only about sustainability in relation to the environment, but also in relation to the employees. Within Jumbo, I assisted in the expansion of the CSR program, divided into the people, planet, and profit parts. Many projects to reduce the environmental footprint of Jumbo have already been started. Jumbo wants to take a proactive role in achieving the goals regarding zero-emissions, the well-being of their employees, and a circular economy.

Within the Jumbo Innovation Team, I have contributed to the process of facilitating the lashing of cargo on board Jumbo ships: 'Project Easy Lash'. In this process, we went through the innovation process together with the 'Friday-out-of-the-box' company. The result of this innovation is a lashing of light material, which means the crew is less tired and can lash faster. It was an honor to participate in the innovation process and contribute to a fundamental activity within the company Jumbo.
As Second Officer, I was responsible for all the safety equipment on board. Consider here, among other things, the lifeboats, life rafts, fire detection systems, fire-fighting systems and survival equipment. I was also responsible for ensuring that the preparations for the voyage were effective and comprehensive. It is essential to prepare well to ensure that the voyage goes well. A great task in which a difference can be made. As Second Officer, I reported directly to the Chief Officer. This means that you have more tasks in the port and during loading and unloading operations. I considered my position as a Second Officer within Jumbo Shipping a great challenge and on board, I make it my responsibility to perform my duty soundly and effectively. For many years, Jumbo Shipping has specialised in transporting heavy cargo, which is taken on-board using the company's own loading equipment. This specialist discipline makes the company a particularly fascinating business. An extremely wide range of duties, combined with a constantly changing area of operation ensures that every day is different. The sail / leave roster consists of a period of 11 weeks at sea and 8 weeks home leave.

For a period of half a year I worked in the Inquiry department of Jumbo Shipping. As a Junior Technical Sales Engineer you assess from the request of potential customers to what extent certain cargoes can be transported onboard one of the ships of Jumbo Shipping. The cargo weights, required minimum outreach, available lifting height, ship stability and a lifting plan are included in the assessment of the cargo. It also looks at how the load can be loaded and unloaded efficiently, safely and cost-effectively.A particularly interesting and valuable addition to the job of mate on board heavy cargo ships!
The position of Third Officer focuses on supporting the Second and First Officers on-board. This includes keeping charts and books up to date, assisting in monitoring the quality and validity of all safety equipment, providing support for loading and unloading operations, and assisting in a wide variety of activities on-board a ship. For many years, Jumbo Shipping has specialised in transporting heavy cargo, which is taken on-board using the company's own loading equipment. This specialist discipline makes the company a particularly fascinating business. In addition to the Third Officer's support duties, he or she stands bridge watches and is responsible for safe and correct navigation and watch keeping. An extremely wide range of duties, combined with a constantly changing area of operation ensures that every day is different. The sail / leave roster consists of a period of 11 weeks at sea and 8 weeks home leave.

Every year, the Dutch pilotage service arranges many pilot acts in and in the approaches to the Dutch sea ports. Its areas of operation are the regions Rotterdam-Rijnmond, Amsterdam-IJmond, the River Scheldt and North. The pilots board the ship a specified distance off the coast and then pilot it into port. Pilots are transported over water by helicopters and tenders. I was a sailor onboard a Pilot Tenders for the Dutch pilotage service. Here my activities consist of communicating with the duty officer, assisting the pilots when boarding and disembarking a vessel, and watch keeping.
West-Terschelling
The K.N.R.M. (Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij) attempts to rescue and assist people in peril on the sea and in expansive inland waters at no charge. Every lifeboat station along the Dutch coast has its own crew that is ready to put to sea 24/7. This is also the case for the West-Terschelling lifeboat station. This station houses the Arie Visser lifeboat. This is one of the largest lifeboat models in the K.N.R.M. fleet. It is an 'all-weather' boat, which means it can sail in any condition. The crew at the West-Terschelling station consists of a professional captain and a large number of volunteers. I consider it an honour to have been part of this crew! After studying on Terschelling, I left the island and therefore also the K.N.R.M. I had a very instructive and enjoyable time at the West-Terschelling station!
The training to become Maritime Officer all Ships also includes a 'practical' period. This consists of 10 months of sailing, split into two periods of 5 months. During this period, you become acquainted with shipping and the work and life on-board a ship. You sail with and are part of the crew. A 'takenboek' (task book), and approximately ten reports, accompany you during your apprenticeship, which ensure that you experience all aspects of life on-board. I sailed both 5-month apprenticeship periods with the Flinter shipping company. This company is located in Barendrecht (NL) and specialises in transporting dry bulk, project cargo and containers. The diversity of cargo and the operating area make this a very interesting company. During my apprenticeship periods, we mainly sailed in European waters. From Constanza (Romania) to Jakobstad (Finland) and from Archangelsk (Russia) to Cyprus.
