Major campaigns included the successful prevention of dumping onto the Australian market or Canadian pork, New Zealand apples and Filipino bananas and two US based attempts to destabilise the Australia wheat marketing system.He led the attack on the high interest rate policies of the Federal Government and the US Lamb Import Quotas of 1999. Bob started as the Morning Desk Editor and a Business Writer and later became the Sydney Stock and Futures Exchange Correspondent. Appointed Deputy Finance Editor in 1983. This position was centred on media liaison with Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery, externally based health reporters and regional media in the Minister's electorate of Gwydir, which covered almost one third of New South Wales. The position also required liaison with the Federal and State Health Departments..

The duties included general and financial reporting as well as covering State Parliament. The administrative duties included liaising with South Australian clients of the Australian Associated Press and Reuters news wire services. With the introduction of the National Football League, Bob was required to report for radio and newspapers on the Tuesday night Australian Rules Football matches.

Bob edited the two major National News bulletins using stories from a team of over thirty journalists in nineteen remote locations across Papua New Guinea, plus wire service feeds. During this time Bob covered the 1975 Bougainville Succession and the proclamation of Papua New Guinean Independence. He spent two months managing the Islands News operation from the Rabaul News Room and later the Royal Tour of the highlands by Prince Charles.

Bob successfully gained one of the two Cadet Journalists positions offered in 1970. There were no tertiary journalism schools in 1970. He completed the three year course early after writing,editing and producing radio and television news bulletins and working initially on general reporting duties before becoming the Court, Finance and Transport Writer and assistant State Parliamentary Correspondent.
