Three neighborhood activists and I formed a for-profit partnership in 1997 to rehabilitate dilapidated houses in the North Chattanooga neighborhood where we live. We pooled our resources to buy out a slumlord who owned multiple substandard properties. To date we have rehabbed over 30 single-family rentals into homeownership, and have helped our neighborhood become one of the hottest real estate markets in the city. We were featured on HGTV in 1998. Our most recent project is a six-unit townhouse development on Chattanooga's North Shore. Very cool.

I was responsible for all of the mixed-income redevelopment in targeted neighborhoods. My primary duties included crafting strategic plans for target neighborhoods, overseeing land acquisition, zoning and variances, architectural design review, and issuing RFPs for land contracts with private sector developers. Excellent writing skills. I personally supervised most of the historic preservation work. I was the senior liaison with the Lyndhurst Foundation in forging public/private revitalization partnership in these targeted neighborhoods for revitalization: Cowart Place Neighborhood (begun in 1999)—202 units of mixed-income, urban infill housing on Chattanooga’s Southside. Leveraged over $18 million in private investment. MLK Neighborhood (begun in 2003)—133 units of new and rehabbed infill housing in urban neighborhood next to downtown. Housing types consist of LIHTC project, historic rehab, new condominiums, and an adaptive reuse of an old elementary school into condos. Attracted over $20 million in private investment. Jefferson Heights Neighborhood (begun in 2005)—52 single-family bungalows completed, with all units Earthcraft certified. A LEED-Homes and LEED-ND pilot project. Phase 1 was the winner of the 2007 Green Building Award by the local chapter of the USGBC.

I was hired by Mayor Jon Kinsey to coordinate the design of the Development Resource Center, an 80,000 SF city office building that exhibited cutting-edge environmental design in daylighting, storm water detention, HVAC, and durable materials. Had there been a LEED certification available at the time, this building would have qualified.
