This is highly responsible, supervisory, and administrative work in planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the police department. Work involves the responsibility for the effective operation of the police department through planning, organizing, and directing its activities, assuring that law and order are maintained, that laws and ordinances are enforced, and that measures are implemented to prevent crimes and to protect lives and property.

Supervises subordinate personnel engaged in the preparation and maintenance of various records, reports, and related materials; reviews records and reports submitted by other divisions for completeness and conformance to regulations.Performs the duties of a superior officer in the absence of the superior.

Work involves professional response to the need for the prevention and detection of crimes, and for generally maintaining law and order. Work also involves patrolling assigned area, traffic enforcement, accident reporting, and criminal investigations. Assignments are received from superior officers and are carried out under established policies and procedures.
