Tasked with building plastic injection mold in an automated cell and develop the process to run lights out with a zero % scrap rate. When I started at CPD the work cell was installed but not in use. The mold makers on hand didn't have the skills to use a CNC EDM or a the milling machine with the Siemens A2100 control. I Stared using the EDM side of the machine right away because of my experience with being a CNC EDM specialist in my mold making tenure in MN. It wasn't long before the EDM was running lights out. Tooling ball inspecting the electrodes I designed and machined using Solidworks CAD and Mastercam CAM. Skills and a process I created in MN. The challenge was creating a system using tool life management and a custom code generator I designed to compile the files in a sub-routine so the process was flexible. I was able to easily add to the work cell in the daylight hours and let it run throughout the night leaving myself time to add to it in the morning. My longest runtime was 457 hours. The challenge then became getting the work into the shop due to the efficiency of the process and timely and accuracy of the work. I was able to remove the bench time on the molds I was building by clearanceing the slide by shut offs in the mold by 50% of the vent depth of the plastic being molded. This eleminated the time on the assembly bench bluing off shut offs.
