I have enjoyed working in the refractory industry since 1975, gaining experience, knowledge and skills in many elements of the business from estimating to QHSE, inspection and project management. Having worked in most industry sectors including Waste to Energy and Biomass, Petrochemical, Steel, Light alloys, Chemical, Power generation and Pulp & Paper, I am able to apply my knowledge and experience on many levels.

Reporting to the CEO of the Power Divivsion within PIGL, I am responsible for all aspects of the Refcom Linings refractory engineering and contracts business, including tendering, contract management, QHSE and business development. My main role is to ensure that all projects awarded are completed within budget and programme, paying particular attention to the health and safety culture and behaviour of our site operatives and the quality of the installations we undertake. I visit job sites to liaise with clients and monitor on-going performance.My responsibilities include finalising month end accounts, monitoring and reporting performance against pre-set budgets and preparation of monthly reports for presentation to the Group Board.

Director responsible for proposals and project management to the petrochemical and power generation industries

Offered the position of contracts manager which included tendering and proposals, HSE and QMS within the company. H&F Construction was established by the former chairman, (Roly Hughes) and contracts director of WFJ Refractories in 1988. Operating extensively within the steel industry, it was my responsibilty to develop the client portfolio and expand the business in to the power generation sector and establish an Acid & Chemical Resistant Linings business. The company was sold to Motherwell Bridge Engineering in 1997.

Initially brought in by Frank Stead, UK Director as a contracts engineer to manage the monolithics division within the S G Blair Group and to assist with tendering and proposals. The company was awarded the refractory maintenance contract at Shell UK, Stanlow Refinery and refractory framework agreements with Alstom Power and E-On UK. Following expansion of the company, I was promoted to General Manager until I was invited to join H&F Construction Ltd in 1992.

Queensferry, Deeside

Offered the position of senior estimator by Roly Hughes, Chairman of WFJ to head up the estimating dept within a long established and successful refractory engineering company with many patented designs for use in the power generation industry. WFJ also operated extensively within the Iron & Steel industry with R&M contracts at LLanwern and Shotton steelworks. WFJ also had the refractory maintenance contract at Shell UK, Stanlow Refinery and during my employment with the company, completed the FCCU shutdown at Esso Fawley Refinery.

After leaving Roan Grammer school I was employed in the estimating department at R B Hilton, Greenwich, London to train as a refractory estimating engineer, with particular focus on power generation. Together with refractory engineering, design and construction I was trained to prepare estimates and technical quotations for projects and to produce material bill of quantities, suitable for use by the site installation teams. After 7 years within the proposals dept. I had experience of refractory systems in Power Generation, Petrochemical, Iron & Steel, Cement, Incinieration and chemicals.
