When I started at Jarvis I was given several loss making projects to “sort out”. It is never easy to turn these things around. From disgruntled clients to demotivated staff, to expensive suppliers due to payment terms, you cannot change one without impacting the other. We got there, relatively quickly, and turned them into profitable contracts making the schools involved happier with the service, and improving cash flow so that suppliers became more competitive. Having reviewed the key cost drivers and where the greatest impact could be felt I started a programme of outsourcing. One particular function I outsourced, cleaning, reducing costs by £120k p.a.I had to negotiate the return of £406k of deductions from Service Fees. Working on improving the Service level led to us being able to reduce deductions from £70k per month to £6k, which improved cash flow as well. Overall, this all resulted in Jarvis getting £11.5m improved dividend return over project.
