3 month internship internship in space systems lab, work continued after end of internship unpaidDelivered flight spacecraft COPPER as part of the ELaNa-IV missionLaunching second flight spacecraft ARGUS in April 2014Designed payload for COPPER with team using an FPGA to control a FLIR LWIR microbolometer camera for the imaging of other spacecraft immediately after ejectionWorked with a multi-thousand line VHDL project implementing a soft processor with a fully custom ISA to control the camera, the framebuffer ram, and the SD card for long term storageDesigned dual port cache controller for efficient delivery of data from the camera to the microsd cardPayload design lead for 3rd mission RASCAL, slated for launch in 2015MISSION DESCRIPTIONS:COPPER is a 1U Cubesat being flown for the purpose of identifying other spacecraft using an LWIR camera immediately after ejection from the P-POD into orbit. The ORS-3 mission flies on November 4, 2013, with 27 total Cubesat payloads, which we hope to image during our mission.ARGUS is a 2U Cubesat flying a radiation payload designed by Vanderbilt University for the purpose of testing radiation effect models for small form factor semiconductor devices.RASCAL is two 3U Cubesats being flown together, attached together at ejection time. The mission is to release the two spacecraft from each other, identify the positioning of each spacecraft relative to one another using active image processing from an imaging payload as well as direct radio link of sensor data between the two spacecraft. Once identified, the spacecraft stabilize with cold thrusters and begin performing flight maneuvers, potentially including docking the two spacecraft.
