Unconditional Freedom operates its main programs in the food insecure space and in prisons through Free Food Harlem and The Prison Monastery. Refettorio Harlem, our new free restaurant, is a dynamic collaboration between Food for Soul, Massimo Bottura's non-profit, and Free Food Harlem. Free Food has operated pop-up restaurants in the Harlem community since 2021 to help restore dignity among the poor and unhoused by serving them nutritious, well-prepared, and ethically and sustainably sourced meals in clean and elegant settings, mirroring the dining experience of high-end farm-to-table restaurants. The essential nutrient in providing meals in communal settings is to strengthen human connection and alleviate the sense of social isolation often faced by people on the streets.“A population not merely healed from the pains and psychic maladies that contributed to their crime (trauma, depression, craving, anxiety), but has flourished into contributive individuals who are driven with purpose and bring benefit to one another, custody staff, the entire prison community, and the incarcerated population at large.”The Unconditional Freedom team is launching our model for incarceration dubbed "The Prison Monastery" in a 200 person housing unit at the largest women's prison in the U.S. in early 2023.It's is one of the only programs that addresses the entire human ecology of a prison, transforming the grounds and soil through the regenerative farms we build within the security perimeter, providing access to nutritious, organic food through the commissary, and including transformative programs and support for both the residents and correctional officers. Corrections deputies are as much a part of the healing community as the inmate population which we believe to be essential.This beautiful vision became a reality during the pandemic when we first approached the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla (CCWF), offering a correspondence course for residents during the Pandemic. The Art of Soulmaking program, https://unconditionalfreedom.org/prisons/, subsequently took off and is now in over 400 prisons across the country. with over 20,000 participants supported by 380 trained & certified volunteers. 6% of the death row population in United States is enrolled. The program for Correctional Officers, Guards To Guardians, launched in 2022, and is endorsed by 20+ corrections officers.
