Communications Technician, Senior• Employed for 7 seasons (six summers, one winter) providing communications support at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, as an employee of the U.S. Antarctic Program’s operations contractors. • Designed spread-spectrum data systems for long-range communication to remote field camps, utilizing mountain-top repeaters and point-to-multi-point technology. • Designed wireless-LAN systems to provide high-speed data communications to remote field camps and support centers. • Installed and maintained OptaPhone systems supporting communications for field camps and grantees performing science research associated with the National Science Foundation. The OptaPhone system is a solar powered , full-duplex, rural telephone system that employs trunking technology. • Performed support duties for science groups deploying autonomous power systems intended to maintain data collection throughout the winter. These systems utilized wind, solar power and communicated via spread-spectrum data links. • Designed and installed two-way radio repeater systems in the McMurdo Sound region of Antarctica.• Provided deep-field-camp communications support utilizing HF radio systems and GOES satellite data-transceiving system. • Provided routine maintenance for Black Island Telecommunications Facility, McMurdo Transmitter Site and NASA’s NAILS remote satellite-tracking system.

SCINI stands for Submersible Capable of under Ice Navigation and Imaging.The SCINI Project is a three year NSF grant that started in 2007. Vehicle development takes place in the Benthic Lab at Moss Landing Marine Labs in Moss Landing, California. Annual field deployments during the Antarctica summer season (fall and winter in the USA) will be based out of McMurdo Station.
