Responsible for the research and development of the company's range of Analytical Instruments including Atomic Absorption, Inductively Coupled Plasma, Ultraviolet/Visible and Infrared Spectrometers and Gas Chromatographs. The technologies used include high and low-level software, digital and analogue electronics, optics, high precision mechanics, fluid and gas control, etc. The Development department was comprised of 50 graduate and PhD scientists, engineers and technicians covering the disciplines of Software, Electronics, Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Design and Project Management.• Introduced new development procedures, Project Management and concurrent engineering methodologies into the Company in order to improve significantly the effectiveness and efficiency of the new product development process. • Achieved substantial reductions in development lead times (factor of 3) and costs. • Implemented Design for Assembly (DFA), Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) techniques in conjunction with suppliers resulting in significant improvements in product reliability and costs. • Product parts counts were more than halved for each new product generation and, together with a move to substantial outsourcing of components, this resulted in a dramatic reduction in product lead times and build times in production. • Responsible for the introduction of new technologies into the company. This involved extensive liaison and collaboration with universities and other companies in the UK and abroad.

Appointed Group Leader of the Microwave Group at Philips Research Laboratories with a staff of 23 mainly graduates and PhDs. The work of the group included research into microwave systems, i.e. Electronic Warfare, Radar, Smart Munitions, Communications and industrial systems and also RF and microwave components. The group was primarily funded by Philips but was also part funded by contracts from the Ministry of Defence. The research projects were primarily performed in support of development departments at Philips businesses in the UK and Europe.• Coordinated a successful bid for funding under the EC DRIVE programme for a research project into a microwave identification system for road vehicles. This involved seeking collaborative partners throughout Europe (including Universities, Polytechnics, industry and government establishments) and writing the overall proposal for the work together with these partners.• External Examiner for Newcastle Polytechnic's MSc and Postgraduate Diploma courses in Microwave and RF Engineering from 1986 to 1988.• Member of IEE Professional Group E12 (Microwave Devices and Techniques).

1978-1985. Project leader responsible for research into millimetre-wave techniques. • Researched new techniques for transmission lines, components and subassemblies for use in the range 30 to 140 GHz. • Developed mixers, filters, oscillators and couplers, etc. using the E-plane transmission line technique. This project evolved into research into mm-wave communication systems at 29 and 60 GHz, low cost mm-wave radar systems at 94 GHz and mm-wave ESM systems. The project was partly funded by the Ministry of Defence and British Telecom. The output from the project was transferred into development and production at Philips Microwave in Hazel Grove, UK and Hollandse Signaal Apparaten in the Netherlands. 1976-1978. Project leader responsible for researching into low noise microwave mixer techniques. This involved research into image and sum frequency enhanced mixers using reactive terminations by means of bandstop filters. Gained considerable experience of waveguide and thin film circuit design during the course of this project including waveguide filters, microstrip and stripline filters, couplers, hybrids, etc. Enrolled for a part time PhD. at Chelsea College, London University researching into the conversion loss behaviour of microwave diode mixers during the course of the project. PhD. awarded in 1980.1974-1976. Joined the Microwave Techniques Group at Philips Research Laboratories in September 1974 working on research into 12 GHz Satellite TV receivers.
