At just 11-years-old, Bobbi’s daughter, Sutton Garner, learned about the devastating impact of food insecurity on children over the summer months. Around this same time, Bobbi received a modest inheritance to create more opportunities to enrich her own life. Fuelled with a start-up fund, Sutton’s determination, and Bobbi’s expertise in fundraising and program management, these two strongminded women dared to make a difference in their city by launching a new charity that would help fill gaps in the network of support for food-insecure kids.Fast forward nine years and Bobbi has led I Can for Kids through one of the fastest and most innovative transitions in the history of Calgary’s charitable food sector. Inspired by recommendations from food insecurity research and the logistical challenges of the global pandemic, Bobbi shifted I Can for Kids from a summer food program to a year-round grocery gift card model in March 2020. Her bold repositioning then attracted the attention of researchers at the University of Calgary who soon demonstrated that food-insecure families prefer to access support through grocery gift cards rather than food hampers or food programs. She has established and sustained strong partnerships with dozens of social service agencies who target the grocery gift card program to families in greatest need.
