Block has worked his whole life for public accountability, transparency and justice for those with no voice. As the Executive Director for Florida’s First Amendment Foundation, Block is working to protect and advance the Sunshine State’s expansive open government and public record laws, which have been under siege in recent years. It is a task for which he is well suited. For more than four decades, Block has worked in news, marketing, and entertainment from London to Lagos, Brooklyn to Bosnia, and Orlando to Hollywood. His journalism career took him from being a correspondent in Mexico and Central America for Reuters, to covering conflict in the former Yugoslavia and genocide in Rwanda for the Independent of London, to reporting on Africa and the Middle East and then counter-terrorism for the Wall Street Journal. Taking a break from life as a reporter, Block was VP of Corporate Communications for Elon Musk’s SpaceX, and MarComm Director for CASIS, a nonprofit charged by US Congress with brokering and promoting research on the International Space Station, before starting his own consultancy, Hurricane Communications. He then founded an award-winning African journalism nonprofit, the Angaza Foundation. Block is co-author of “Disaster: Hurricane Katrina and the Failure of Homeland Security,” which was a Washington Post Book of the Year in 2006. He is also a founding partner of AndX, which is geared to helping social entrepreneurs do well by doing good.
