About Bobby Martin

Bobby is a Community Engagement & Gang Intervention Advisor as well as a Motivational Speaker. Previously worked for over 13 years in the prison estate managing staff and delivery behaviour programmes for substance misuse related offenders. Bobby was also Chair of RESPECT for London & Kent, Surrey & Sussex. This involved supporting staff who were victims of direct and institutional racism within the UK prison system. Bobby is also a trained Conflict Engagement Specialist and he is also an Independent Peer Reviewer for the UK Home Office's Ending Gang & Youth Violence Team. Bobby's advice was one of those sought in the aftermath of the August 2011 riots in Tottenham, UK. He is also a critical advisor and part of the Metropolitan Police's Trident Independent Advisory group and offers this same service to the London Borough of Haringey of which Tottenham sits in. As a motivational speaker he has been involved in talks with young people in schools around London, holding conferences for disaffected males in particular Black males. Bobby is also a featured guest speaker at the London Metropolitan University, for Social Work students and has also been a guest speaker at Greenwich University for students partaking in "CRT" (Critical Race Theory)Bobby is currently engaged in "community cohesion" exercises. This entails facilitating the often "awkward" conversation between the MPS and the Black community. This has been particularly aimed at conversations with members of the "Black Majority led Churches and Mosques. Currently doing this in Haringey, the scene of the start of UK disturbances in 2011. This work is happening alongside the Borough Commander.The Ethos of Bobby is that "Change is Possible".

    My role was to support the local Black community in Haringey in regards to community cohesion with the Metropolitan Police. This included operating as a critical friend to the police. Whereby regular liaisons would be had with the Borough Commander, Area Commander and members of the local Met Police Senior Management Team. We would also operate a drop in service for local community members who had any concerns in regards to crime and possible gang related offending. The service also at times required me to act as a point of mediation between conflicting young people and also with the parents of the same groups.

I would also lead the event planning for regional conferences and develop working relationships with a variety of agencies and services addressing racism. The two regions that I represented were the largest two regions in the Prison Service in regards to BME staff representation. That is London and the old KSS ( Kent, Surrey & Sussex ) areas.
