Theatre arts has been my niche, for which I've been recognized with over 100 nominations and awards in the last 15 years, including winning 22 ariZoni Awards for Theatre Excellence, and 8 National Youth Arts Awards. The majority of my work has been in youth theatre, including set/media/prop design, direction, and writing original plays and musicals. I've also created a large number of original show posters and other marketing materials, original logos, caricatures, puppets, comics, and illustrations. From September 2016 to August 2022, I served on the Board of Directors for Spotlight Youth Theatre, as a part of which I collaborated on planning fund raising and marketing efforts for the organization. I also managed the Google Workspace and web site design and maintenance for SYT for several years, applying a mix of IT skills. I also sponsor and help coordinate an annual contest for original work by young playwrights through Spotlight. I resigned from the Board and temporarily from most theatre production, to relocate in August 2022 from Arizona to Oregon, where I will concentrate more on writing projects than on stagecraft for now.I'm often tapped for unusual specializations. I'm a media designer and animator who prefers projections to integrate with a scene and support the actors, style, and atmosphere of a show, rather than feeling like a lazy substitution for set design. I often employ "old school" hand-drawn animation for an organic feel. Many of my painted set designs are developed especially for community teamwork in the form of "paint by number" patterns that work well for scenery and large scale murals. I have a knack for fun illusions, including forced perspective, mixing projections with live action and painted scenery, and trompe l'oeil. I painted scenery for a black-light puppet show designed to work with the Chromadepth 3D process (for glasses worn during the show), applying my previous expertise as a 3D hobbyist. Another unusual project, which won a Zoni for the first instance of the "Artistic Specialization" category, was my creation of statues in a stage set that appeared to turn in the direction of the watcher, like the busts in Disneyland's Haunted Mansion. In another show, I designed a "Pepper's Ghost" illusion (another Disneyland trick) to make Wonderland's Cheshire Cat disappear from a tree branch.The greatest reward from directing, of course, is in experiencing the growth of the actors and guiding their characters to come to life on stage, as if in their own real world. Likewise the best design work supports these goals.
