THE INTERNATIONAL FIRE SAFETY STANDARDS (IFSS) COALITION IS A GROUP OF PROFESSIONAL AND NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANISATIONS RESPONSIBLE FOR RESEARCHING, DEVELOPING, PUBLICISING AND IMPLEMENTING IFSS GLOBALLY FOR THE CONSTRUCTION AND REAL-ESTATE SECTORS.The coalition supports the creation, maintenance and use of high-quality international principles of fire safety, developing these using a transparent and inclusive standard-setting process.Each of the coalition organisations has signed a declaration of support and commitment to promote and implement IFSS, and to encourage world markets to accept and adopt them. It has established a standard-setting committee dedicated to realising shared and international guiding principles to implement high standards in fire safety.Information regarding the production of these global principles, including the consultation phase, will be posted on this website in due course.

In seeking transformation in our industry, it is essential to acknowledge the challenges of change, and in particular to recognise the complexity which is inherent in work-related ill health. There is an immediacy about safety, in contrast to the long latency periods associated with many occupational diseases. The effects of workplace accidents such as a fall from height are, of course, apparent right away. In contrast, health risks are complex, with invisible, silent hazards such as dust which are just as deadly as safety hazards, but take several years before their effects manifest. However, success is within our grasp: The past achievements of the construction sector in reducing on-site related fatal injuries prove that positive change in our sector is possible. Our goal is to replicate the successful cultural shift we have seen in the industry that led to the sector’s dramatic reduction in on-site injuries and fatalities, with an equally determined effort – but focused on the health of the UK’s construction workforce – by a united industry and its supporting organisations. Ultimately, we want to achieve parity between health and safety in the sector – to manage health like we manage safety – with leadership from the very top.
