Judge Bob Hunter is a native of North Carolina. He practiced law from 1973 to 2019 when he became an appellate jurist. He was educated at UNC and Duke University. As a life-long advocate of education, Attorney Bob Hunter has served as both a professor and scholar, teaching at the law schools of Wake Forest, N.C. Central, and Elon University. He has published in state law reviews. Since the 1990’s he has been a practitioner in alternative dispute resolution first as a superior court mediator, then as a financial services arbitrator and then as an appellate mediator and AAA national panelist in commercial issues. When not practicing law, he enjoys his home in coastal North Carolina. Bob has been licensed to practice law in both federal and state courts for 40 years. Prior to his service on the N.C. Court of Appeals, Attorney Bob Hunter had a broad general practice serving his clients in business law, estates, real property, securities law, and debtor-creditor relations. Bob has represented Republicans, Democrats, the African-American community, the Hispanic Community, and others in his work nationally in election law. From 1985 to 1989, he served as Chairman of the North Carolina Board of Elections. For the past two years, Bob has taught Appellate Advocacy at N.C. Central Law School. Prior to this, he taught Election Law as an adjunct professor at Wake Forest Law School and Elon University School of Law. In his early career, Bob taught Business Law at UNC-G. He has also served as President of BarCares, Inc., a non-profit entity providing counseling services to the legal community and its familiesHonorsAttorney Bob Hunter was recently recognized for his work by the Constitutional Rights and Responsibilities Section of the N.C. Bar Association by receiving its McNeil Smith award for achievement in constitutional law. In 2012, Attorney Bob Hunter was nominated by the N.C. Legal Aid Society and recognized by the N.C. Advocates for Justice as its "Outstanding Appellate Judge of the Year" for his work on North Carolina foreclosure law.
