After 11 years in the tax field (first as Tax Senior Manager at KPMG and then as a Vice President - Tax and Finance at PhyCor, Inc.), I made the leap and joined my father at his growing investment advisory business. That was in 2000, and now, many years later, I look back and know that I am doing what I love. Helping individuals and small businesses provide for their financial future and managing the risks inherent in the markets is very fulfilling and challenging. As an active manager of no-load mutual funds, I realize that making money is only half the battle. Keeping what you make in bad markets is the much overlooked other half. Most advisers subscribe to a "buy and hold" mentality but that approach will lead to sleepless nights and significant losses during bad markets. I believe that active management can capture the majority of a good market and avoid the majority of a bad one. In fact, I have largely been able to do just that for my clients.
