Hired to bring a new level of professionalism to data in Congenica and to centralise the data function, I rapidly introduced a new set of capabilities, raised the organisation's awareness of the value of data and forged strong connections across Architecture, AI, Informatics, Clinical Science, Product and Dev/Ops teams, as well as creating strong connections with the Executive. I developed Congenica's Data Strategy and successfully presented this, at the same time building a strong, respected and extremely capable team of an expert scientific curator and two highly skilled data engineers.

Creating an 'inner source' culture of code sharing and reuse. Encouraging a shift towards automated testing, CI/CD and agile approaches. Leading a multi-disciplinary team responsible for designing, provisioning and supporting computational platforms for staff across Syngenta, from early Research and Development to Commercial. Providing capabilities to write, execute, deploy and maintain code and build applications using a range of technologies including R, Python, Julia, Octave, Scala, Pipeline Pilot, Oracle Application Express and others.

Achievements included:● Delivering solutions giving access to current, historic and previously inaccessible data● Enabled scientists to develop and deploy their own software, tools, data and models, thereby realising efficiency gains, greater consistency within departments and accelerating project timelines.

As part of a Technology Strategy Board (Innovate UK) project, I managed the development of Rothamsted Research's Ondex Data Integration software. During the project I designed and oversaw the implementation of new cheminformatics capabilites and extension of the existing bioinformatics capabilities, as well as performing hands on integrations, analytics and visualisations of Syngenta data for both Biological and Chemical Sciences groups.

Managing a team of 6 staff, I designed software and directed the work of programmers focusing on data submission and processing tools. Achievements included:● Raising awareness and utilisation of EBI/ENA resources by presenting talks and posters at meetings, contributing to scientific papers and supporting external groups in developing standards, best practices and ontologies● Reduced submission time by 90% and improved data accuracy by driving the development of new tools for very large scale and NGS data submissions● Raised data quality and consistency by providing training to European Patent Office staff and users

I developed my curation skills and knowledge of scientific data, increasingly mentoring other staff, improving throughput by identifying and removing or changing unnecessary working practices, and developing software to allow remote working for EBI staff, increasing output and reduced the number of work days lost, and allowing the demonstration of services at international meetings.
